Preparing for a book signing at New Scientist Live
I have written or contributed to a number of popular science books aimed at various audiences from young children to serious dinosaur enthusiasts and academics. Below are the original covers of these as they were released in the UK, though some have different covers (and even titles!) when they were released in paperback or in other countries.
- My next book, out this November, written with Mark Witton
- My latest book, it’s more technical than the others but full of ideas about dinosaurs and
- My second popular science book, about the gaps in our knowledge about dinosaurs
- My first popular science book that covers the evolution and biology of the tyrannosaurs (2017)
- A children’s book following the story of an important discovery
- Series of books for children on dinosaur biology and evolution
- I was an author of a chapter on Asian dinosaurs
- I authored a chapter on this academic book on this history of palaeontology
- A Dungeons and Dragons companion book I helped to edit
- A book for older children done for the BBC. Oddly this is available in China but not the UK
- I was a consultant for this one and it is based around my research
- I contributed a number of descriptions of dinosaurs and pterosaurs
Here are some comments and praise for my books:
On Uncovering Dinosaur Behaviour:
Dr Eric Snively, Oklahoma State University “The book’s depth of extant perspective refracts and clarifies how I think about dinosaur behavior, both in rigor of inference and overlooked possibilities.”
Broadcaster Chris Packham “Here Dave Hone very smartly, intuitively and honestly maps behaviour on to fossilised bones to make them come alive.”
Presenter and researcher Professor Alice Roberts, University of Birmingham “Fascinating and incisive… it’s not just a book about dinosaurs, it’s about how sicence works”
Professor Paul Barrett, Natural History Museum, London “Compelling, authoritative and enterainly written. In a field rife with hyperbole, speculation, and unsupported assertions, this book provides an essential critical overview.”
On The Future of Dinosaurs (How Fast did T. rex run?):
Dr Douglas Rovinsky, Monash University “This is probably the best book on palaeobiology I have ever read. Every section essentially is a primer on research lab construction, and every page a PhD thesis in waiting. An exceptional book.”
On The Tyrannosaur Chronicles:
Historian Tom Holland “Gripping and wonderfully informative”
The Tyrannosaur Chronicles has been translated into Russian and Uncovering Dinosaur Behaviour will be out in Chinese and Spanish in 2025.
I am represented by Max Edwards of Apple Tree Literary, so you can contact him if you are interested in commissioning me for future works.
